DAYTON, OH (April 13, 2016) – Superior emergency care has earned Miami Valley Hospital South a spot among 12 sites in the nation that have each been recognized as an Emergency Center of Excellence.™
The designation was awarded this month by Emergency Excellence, an organization specializing in emergency-department benchmarking.
“We take great pride in the high level of emergency care provided at Miami Valley Hospital South,” says Darin Pangalangan, MD, medical director for emergency services at Miami Valley Hospital South. “Achieving this national recognition is a great testimony to the medical staff, nurses, EMS and support staff working in concert together.”
Miami Valley Hospital South saw nearly 34,000 patients last year in its emergency department. Due to its streamlined processes, on average, patients currently see a physician within 15 minutes of arrival.
“Miami Valley Hospital South’s emergency department does a fantastic job,” said Dr. Mark Reiter, CEO of Emergency Excellence. “Physician-nurse relationships are extremely good, which translates into excellent patient care.”
The Emergency Center of Excellence designation is earned by achieving superior results in more than 100 key performance indicators. Each of the 100 indicators is linked to one or more of Emergency Medicine Excellence’s seven pillars of excellence: safety, satisfaction, solvency, space, staff, support, and systems. In awarding this designation, Emergency Excellence collects benchmark data and surveys physicians, nurses, hospital staff, medical staff, and administrators during an on-site assessment. Surveyors from Emergency Excellence were onsite at Miami Valley Hospital South in early April.
“We’ve always known that we have an exceptional patient experience at Miami Valley Hospital South, and this goes a long way in putting that verification stamp on it,” says Joann Ringer, chief operating officer at Miami Valley Hospital South. “This recognition speaks to the quality and patient outcomes that we strive for in providing care.”
Miami Valley Hospital South is a full-service emergency center offering care for minor to severe injuries, including heart attack, stroke, and trauma. It is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians from Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton’s only Level I Trauma Center, and has a heliport for CareFlight Air and Mobile Services and an on-site mobile intensive care unit. The emergency department has advanced cardiac monitoring capability, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the premises. It also houses advanced equipment and technology, such as the Premier Health Telestroke Network, offering faster treatment for patients experiencing a stroke. The emergency department is one of eight emergency centers across Premier Health.
“We are very honored by this recognition,” says Mark Shaker, president and CEO of Miami Valley Hospital. “The standards met by the team at Miami Valley Hospital South are rigorous and are an example of their dedication to providing excellent patient care.”
Emergency Excellence developed the award in response to the 2006 Institute of Medicine’s call for emergency department improvement and to motivate emergency care providers to achieve a higher standard of quality.
